Lowe Alpine Ascent Range | Preview

We take a look at Lowe Alpine's new collection of climbing and mountaineering packs

2017 marks 50 years since Lowe Alpine released their first ever product – a pack designed specifically for climbers and mountaineers. To mark the anniversary year, Lowe Alpine have released a brand new range of packs which, once again, are designed specifically for those heading up high.

Their new Ascent collection is supposedly made to cater for all levels of experience and for all types of climbing pursuits, from summer hut-to-hut tours in the Pyrenees to winter climbs in Scottish winters.

According to Tim Fish, the Brand Director at Lowe Alpine, the new range “uses all 50 years of the company’s experience and is their “most advanced yet” with innovative designs, clean and simple features and new technologies and fabrics.

Lowe Alpine Ascent Range: The Ascent Superlight

The ‘hero item’ in the Ascent range is certainly the Ascent Superlight. The 30-litre pack is phenomenally light, weighing just 580g when fully stripped back (the back panel is removable – and it doubles as a useful fold bivvi mat). It uses a clever ripstop and PU coated nylon fabric that’s ultralight but also tough, with a 100 Denier rating.

There are plenty of climber-friendly features including straps that have been carefully designed to allow complete freedom of movement when on the rock face, mitt friendly buckles, a secure and easy-to-use ice axe holder, loads of external clipping points and a big grab handle to attach belays.

“£100 is a fairly lofty price for a daypack but the high quality materials and innovation go some way to justifying this.”

£100 is a fairly lofty price for a daypack but the high quality materials and innovation go some way to justifying this. We gave it our stamp of approval by selecting and reviewing the Ascent Superlight for our Outdoor 100 earlier in 2017.

Lowe Alpine Ascent Range: Other Options in the Range

Another lead item in the Ascent range is the Alpine Ascent (pictured below). This is available in 40:50, 30 and 25 litre capacities for men and 38:48 and 28 litre models for women.

Like the Ascent Superlight, it’s a pack made with climbers in mind, featuring loads of clipping points, a strap for crampons and mitt friendly buckles. It also has two ice axe attachment points and a proper alpine back system that’s designed to shed snow with ease.

Also in the Lowe Alpine Ascent range is the 40:50-litre Mountain Ascent (£120) which will be worth considering for any multi-day camps or hut-to-hut trips, and the entry level Peak Ascent which comes in 32 and 42-litre capacities (£70/£75).

All of the packs are available in men’s and women’s sizes. For the women’s versions the back lengths and shoulder straps are shorter and the hipbelt-to-shoulder ratio is adapted to fit the ratio of an average woman.

An interesting gear fact is that Lowe Alpine actually created the first ever women’s fit pack back in the 1970s. It was named the ND range after Nanda Devi, a mountaineer and close friend of Jeff Lowe (the brand’s founder) who lost her life climbing the mountain her father, also a mountaineer, named her after.
