Millican The Smith Rucksack 25l Review

Meet Mr Smith, Smith the Rucksack. He’s the newest member of the Millican family. You know, the lighter, fitter, nippier cousin. He’s also partly bionic (more of that soon). He, like you, leads an original life. He’s designed for adventures, designed for the spirit of the open road and the open hillside. He’ll thrive when launched on to the top of a Bolivian bus or when slung down on a windy Lake District mountaintop.

But what about details? The 25-litre Smith the Rucksack, part of Millican’s Maverick range, which we’re getting to know today, is lightweight and weatherproof. The Bionic bit of him is the canvas made from 57 per cent recycled polyester and 38 per cent cotton.

The remaining 5 per cent is a high-tenacity polyester, and that’s what makes this canvas Bionic – up to 30 per cent stronger than even regular canvas. Fewer seams means a stronger pack too. And all that strength is made weatherproof with the impregnation of paraffin wax – a never-bettered weatherproofing treatment for canvas.

“The Smith is seriously tough. This is a bag to last you a lifetime of travels, a lifetime of adventures, a lifetime of living as a maverick.”

So far, so durable – but the Smith is also eminently practical. There’s a concealed padded laptop sleeve, studded and zipped security pockets for iPads, phones and documents, and the roll-top opening – great for those wet days – has a super-strong aluminium buckle. The 25-litre version also has a secure and spacious pocket at the front, and two large open elasticated side pockets for bottles, maps and guidebooks. There’s an external attachment for walking poles or a camera tripod.

The shoulder straps are adjustable, padded and designed for a perfect fit. A removable waist and sternum strap can be buckled for cycling or long mountain days – and when things get a bit hot, the padded air-mesh back allows in a cooling breeze. There’s even a fold-away reflective strip and a clip-on light buckle on the front panel and a leather reinforced grab handle.
In short, the Smith is seriously tough. This is a bag to last you a lifetime of travels, a lifetime of adventures, a lifetime of living as a maverick. Once you’ve met Smith the rucksack you’re sure to fill him with memories.
