Advice for Budding Writers, Photographers and Filmers

We will happily accept submissions from anyone, but competition is fierce so don’t be disheartened if we don’t publish your work.

Writers:

Want to be a travel, adventure or action sports journalist? The key is to get out there and start doing it. Set up your own blog, go on trips, cover competitions in your local area. The more you practise, the better you’ll get.

When pitching story ideas to a site like Mpora the angle is key. Think about what makes your story unique and/or different and focus on that. Did you travel to somewhere way off the beaten track? Is there something particularly newsworthy about the country, rider or sport you’re covering?

Most importantly, think about why Mpora readers would care about your story. To get people interested your writing should inspire an emotion in your readers. If that emotion is “meh” then you should probably rethink your story or come at it from another angle.

Photographers:

If you’re just starting out and wondering how to crack action sports photography, try going to a few events where you can shoot some professionals. Keep shooting and/or making edits, your skills will develop over time, as will your relationships with pro riders.

With travel and adventure photography again the most important thing is just getting out there and doing it.

Filmers:

As with photography, your relationships with riders and your access to eye-catching places is key. And again, it’s all about getting out there and doing it.

Don’t worry if you don’t own the latest Phantom camera or have access to an Avid editing suite – a clever, unusual or funny idea goes a long way towards making a video go viral and getting your name out there.
