If you’ve always dreamt of cruising down a river with a blade of grass hanging out your mouth Tom Sawyer-style, then camping on its banks, this Swedish company could help you realise those fantasies.
Wilderness in Varmland offers group rafting trips down the meandering and slow-running Klaralven river. But you have to work for that chill time for these timber rafts must first be fashioned by your very own bare hands.
You don’t have to fell your own trees of course, but you do have to construct your raft from the materials and instructions provided. The latter part of the build must be done in the water as at over 1.5 tonnes the raft would be too heavy to move after that.
Then you’ll be off on tour floating bedroom, immersed in nature and free to bath in the river and forests, with a canoe attached to your raft in case you need to get into the country to stock up on camping supplies. You can either camp on your well-moored raft or in one of the many campsites you’ll encounter along the way.
As you unwind, while the river winds, you’ll get to see lots of beautiful flora and fauna along the way including beavers, moose and deer. And if you buy a fishing permit you can even catch your own supper.
