When most of us think of kayaking, we picture ourselves pootling down a gentle stream with ducks, carp and the odd abandoned shopping trolley.

We don’t really consider just how gnarly kayaking can get.

These guys were kayaking Nevis Bluff in New Zealand when Jared, one of their team members, got caught in a sieve and couldn’t get himself out. A sieve is a narrow opening where water is forced underneath a rock.

“How many more crazy rivers can you run before you lose a friend?”

When his pals got to him, he was already wedged and being sucked under by the strong current. The force was too much and they had to let go.

Luckily, Jared makes it out alive – but it’s a seriously close call. As Rush Sturges says, “How many drops, how many more crazy rivers can you run before you lose a friend?”
