Nine years ago, Travis Pastrana wrote his name into the record books when he nailed the first ever double backflip in motocross history.
The year was 2006, the stage was the X-Games, and the unthinkable stunt sent shockwaves through the world of action sports, causing fans and civilians alike to spontaneously shotgun beers around the world.
Now, of course moto has come a long way since that massive day, but nobody has ever gone so far as to try and one up Travis – to go that much bigger and one full turn better, and actually take on the triple backflip. Until now.
That’s right, Travis Pastrana has just announced that the moto triple is coming later this year, but it’s not going to be him who will be sitting in the rider’s seat.
Rather, it’s going to be Australian Nitro Circus man and Red Bull X-Fighter Josh Sheehan, a man who lists Travis Pastrana amongst his biggest inspirations – like the rest of us – and who (very) regularly nails double backflips in FMX competition.
How big a moment is this? It’s so big that Nitro Circus just lead their announcement video with a quote from Nelson Mandela. That’s when you know shit is getting serious.
It goes without saying that Josh is one of the best riders in the world right now, but is this effort going to be too ambitious for even him? Will his giant balls prove too big to stomp the jump? He’s going to be taking on a ramp three times the size of a normal FMX ramp after all.
With Travis standing by his side though, and a whole lot of training under his belt, we’re guessing Josh will be more than ready to take on the task whenever the big day arrives. Either way, it’ll sure as hell be a day he’ll remember for the rest of his life.
