Giant Bicycles have announced intentions for a 36” inch wheel mountain bike in a release sure to divide opinion.

The move comes after the 29” inch wheel bike has been widely accepted in the MTB community in the past few years, and Giant have embraced the bigger is better motto to get one step ahead of the rest of the field and be the first to drop a wheel size that matches their company name.

Team spokesperson Hugh Gwyheel said: “It was only a matter of time until someone in the industry took the next step, so why not us?

“The 36 inch wheels will offer a smoother ride, a lower centre of gravity for the rider and a more maintainable top speed on the trails. It’s the natural next step.”

Gwyheel admitted that the move was set to all but kill off the 26 inch wheel, and pinpointed the growing size of logs appearing on his home trails and the fact that mountain biking is really quite difficult as the driving factors behind the move.

“There’s this little gang of kids in my area that keep leaving logs on the trail,” the Welshman continued. “I think they’re eight or nine. Dickheads. The lot of them.

“I’m always having to ride around the logs they leave there at the moment or get off my 29er when I come across a gap jump because it’s too tricky. But with the 36” wheel you can just roll across the gaps or logs and get to the bar quicker – which if we’re being honest is really the only reason any of us even own a bike.

“My wife is always telling me that size doesn’t matter and that I shouldn’t worry so much about it, but I told her the same thing I told her when she tried to say homeschooling would get rid of our son’s asthma – you’re wrong Dianne. You’re wrong.

“This will give all the 29er fans out there an even better way of overcompensating for everything that’s wrong in their lives.

“It’s time to put Giant riders on giant wheels. By which I don’t mean really, really big bicycle riders, of course. I mean regular size riders who ride Giant bicycles on wheels which are 36 inch. You’re still with me, right?”

The bike is currently in production in the Giant factory, which is a lot bigger than most the factories around it, and should be available for purchase on 1 April 2017.
