DirtTV: Huckfest – Red Bull Hardline 2015

Catch up with the Dirt:TV: Huckfest team as they get their fingernails muddy at Red Bull Hardline 2015, one of the fiercest downhill mountain biking events of the year. This event was not for the feint-hearted as we’ll explain, so there are plenty of nail-biting moments for you to savour, alongside all manner of tomfoolery from the crowd, the riders, and the occasional photographer.

Located in Dinas Mawddwy in the Hills of Mid-Wales, the course is so fearsome that only eight riders had the courage and good fortunate to make it to the finals. For that they can thank the fiendish mind of Dan Atherton, who has designed and built a course so difficult he himself sustained a serious shoulder injury on the first day of riding, and which features a step-up known as the ‘Renegade’ no one was brave (or foolhardy) enough to attempt.

With almost all contenders failing to complete a single full lap, participants were content just to be able to stay the course. Eventual winner Ruaridh Cunningham magnanimously attributed his victory to staying-power as opposed to any competitive edge over the other riders, and named Gee Atherton as the true star of the event. Gee’s failure to win on the day despite reportedly dominating throughout, and his bad luck in the form of flat tyres on two consecutive days, illustrates just how treacherous Dan Atherton’s course really is.

If nothing else this makes for electrifying viewing, so have a look for yourself. With plans afoot to tone down the event in the hope of attracting a broader, less reckless spectrum of riders, this might be the only Red Bull Hardline event to feature quite this level of mayhem.
