Mountain Biking

Paraplegic MTB Hero Martyn Ashton Just Tried to Raise £7,000 For Rehab… And Got So, So, So Much More

If you ever needed proof that mountain bikers are the best...

Most people will know the story of Martyn Ashton at this point. He’s the mountain biking trials legend that had a life-changing accident in 2013 during one of his touring trial shows that left him paraplegic.

Martyn has been stunning the world for some time now. His “Road Bike Party” videos warranted millions of views on YouTube and saw him take on new territory as he flipped and tricked his way around the world on a racing bike.

His return to the bike in 2015 video “Back on Track”, on a bike specially modified for his condition, wowed the world again. He’s a much loved figure in mountain biking and beyond not only for his influence on the sport, but for his attitude; always positive and always inspirational to everyone who watches.

The target of £7,000 was reached within hours… The fund now stands on just under £40,000 – reached in two days.

Pretty much, he shows the rest of the world day in, day out, exactly how they should be living their lives. Happy, positive and always looking on the bright side of life.

Now, a few days ago Martyn put up a status on his Facebook saying that he was looking to sell the famous red Colnago C59 Disc bike from Road Bike Party 2 in order to fund some “rather expensive rehabilitation equipment.”

Naturally, the community told him to hold onto the bike and start up a GoFund me page instead – allowing everyone who wanted to contribute to do exactly that, and give back to a man who has given us so much both on the bike and off.

Amazingly, the target of £7,000 was reached within hours. The reaction was outstanding, and at the time of writing, the fund now stands on over £40,000 – a figure reached in two days.

The mountain bike community have always been a tight knit one, and you’d be hard pushed to find a man better liked than Martyn Ashton in the scene. The GoFundMe page is still live at this link, so click on over and donate if you’d like to help out Martyn even further.

The rider took to Facebook the day after the post went live and smashed it’s target to say simply “speechless”, and the story has even been covered on BBC, which you can watch here:
