Arc’teryx Alpha SV Jacket Review

When you are dangling from an ice wall, 3,000m above sea level, in the howling wind and snow, you want to make sure you’re wearing a jacket that will keep you bone dry. Arc’teryx’s Alpha SV jacket will do that, and more. It’s their most durable jacket, made to withstand severe alpine weather conditions.

Based in British Columbia, Canada, Arc’teryx are right in the heart of the perfect testing ground for mountaineering and winter climbing equipment. This shows in their jacket design – they have thought of every tiny detail, which makes all the difference when you are climbing in the world’s harshest environments.

The Alpha SV is made with triple-layered GoreTex Pro, which means it is the most waterproof jacket money can buy. The zippers on the front and under the arms are also highly water-resistant, preventing leaks in the wrong places. GoreTex is not only waterproof but it is also highly breathable, allowing good ventilation when you are sweating, tackling an overhung rock face.

“Arc’Teryx have thought of every tiny detail, which makes all the difference when you are climbing in the world’s harshest environments.”

The minimalist design is constructed using micro-seams, making this jacket lighter than ever before. It weighs a mere 490g – impressive for such a sturdy mountaineering jacket. The hood is helmet compatible with adjustable cinch cords to make sure it wraps snug around your head, plus there are extra cords around the waist and hems, so you can tighten the jacket to fit your body perfectly. It also has a tall collar to keep your chin protected from the wind and the ice off your beard.

The mid-length cut allows a climbing harness to comfortably fit over the top, while leaving enough room underneath the jacket for multiple layers. It’s not hard to see why this jacket has won numerous awards from Backpacker Magazine in the US, Forbes, Outdoor Magazine in Germany and now of course the accolade of being selected for the Mpora Outdoor 100.

The Arc’teryx Alpha SV isn’t a cheap jacket but when you are tackling alpine peaks in winter, you don’t want to skimp on comfort, weight and durability. If you want a long-lasting hardshell made using high-performance materials and technology, this jacket is without a doubt is one of the best on the market.
