Stanley Mountain Vacuum Coffee System Review

Clever, clever, clever. The Stanley Mountain Vacuum Coffee System is a brilliant piece of kit. On expeditions, the enjoyment of a luxury is heightened ten-fold. Most outdoor lovers have one, a luxury that they’ll always make room for in their backpack, whether it’s a piece of Kendal Mint Cake, a portable speaker or a even sneaky hip flask full of whisky. Proper coffee – and the tools to make it properly – is ours.

Stanley are of course famous for their pretty much indestructible flasks (it should also be said they make the best commuter mug, and we’ve tried many). It’s also a company that breathes authenticity. The heritage dates back to 1913 when William Stanley Jr fused vacuum insulation and the strength of steel in one bottle.

“This is a piece of luxury that will quickly become an almost essential item.”

We always seem to have a Stanley item of some sort with us. So when the Mountain Vacuum Coffee System appeared we had to have one – and it’s a thoroughly enjoyable experience making a coffee. Why so good? Well, this tidy flask actually has many parts, all well considered, and neatly fitting.

Imagine, the dawn is breaking, the frost begins to slip off the tent, the Primus stove is sparked up and the water is heating. Firstly the lid is a unit that includes two cups and a dry storage area for, yes, ground coffee. A bottom attachment to the flask is actually ia stainless steel jug (that can be used to heat the water over a stove) with a spout and a foldable handle. It also conceals the French press.

Yep, this is a cafetiere-style system to make coffee. Empty the coffee grounds into the jug, pour on your water (the vacuum insulated bottle keeps drinks hot for 24 hours, cold for 20 hours and iced for 100 hours) and let it rest a couple of minutes while you enjoy the aromas. Slowly press down the filter, et voila – a brilliant cafetiere coffee to start your day. You can even make more than you need and pour it back into the vacuum for later in the day.

It may be overkill for a multi-day trek or where weight is important (it weighs 1093 grams) but for a surf trip, basecamp, bikepacking or a day or two on the mountains this is a piece of luxury that will quickly become an almost essential item.
