The concept of ‘Health and Safety’ couldn’t be more Buzz Killington if it wore a top hat and made appearances on Family Guy. Yes, we know it’s based on the idea of keeping people healthy and safe. And, yes, we know that being healthy and safe does have it’s benefits. It’s just that, sometimes, being healthy and safe is extremely boring.
Back in the old days, things were different. People, for want of a better phrase, didn’t give a shit. Well, of course, they did. It’s just they had so much more courage than we do now. Look up ‘courage’ in the dictionary, and you might just see a sepia-toned photograph of a trapeze artist flinging themselves through the air beneath a huge circus tent…without a safety rope. This does depend on what dictionary you own.
Anyway, times were tough. The idea of a “comfort zone” was, for most people at least, nothing more than a mythical dream. Perhaps that’s why wing-walkers, in the early part of the 20th century, were so outrageously daring. They didn’t have a DFS reclinable sofa, and 2000 channels to keep them entertained, so they had to go up into the air and do the craziest things imaginable.
