100 million sharks are killed across the world every year, according to a report in the Marine Policy journal. Just twelve people were killed by sharks in 2011.

In case you haven’t already come across it, Shark Week was concocted by the Discovery Channel as a way to show a full week of shark documentaries. It’s now evolved into a worldwide shark awareness week.
