Road Cyclist Loses Control and Brings Down Half the Pack at Redlands Bicycle Classic

An unfortunate minor loss of control with considerable consequences...

There are two types of people who turn up for road cycling events; cycling enthusiasts, and those hoping to see a pile of people wearing lycra crash to the ground.

There are also people who randomly stumble upon the event of course, but they quickly fall into one of the two categories above, eliminating the need for a third category.

It’s a theory that sums up the human race quite accurately when you think about it, in the worst possible way of course – large crowds of people getting hyped and happy on an enthralling spectacle, and everyone who isn’t involved or doesn’t like it that much hoping to see it crash and burn for their own amusement. Oh humanity, what are you like?

Anyway, the “crashers-and-burners” of the world will have been left more than happy should they have been standing at the turn below for stage four of the 2016 Redlands Bicycle Classic, the longest continuous running stage race in American bicycle racing.

As shown in the action-packed slow-motion minute below, the second place rider loses control of his rear wheel going over a bump on the road, struggles and ultimately fails to save himself from a bail, and then causes absolute carnage by bringing half the rest of the field down with him.

Fortunately there were no serious injuries, though we imagine there were more than a few scratches and bruises the morning after.

Watch the video below, and then go punish yourself if you enjoyed it too much…
