The latest edition of the Tour de France came to a close on Sunday on the Champs-Elysees, and Chris Froome’s general classification victory means he’s now the only Brit to win the race twice.
While Froome had looked good for the yellow jersey for much of the Tour, it certainly wasn’t easy-going for the Team Sky man, who found himself on the wrong end of some shocking crowd hostility after unmerited doping accusations surfaced around him – some fans even spitting on him mid-ride and throwing cups of urine in his face.
The Kenyan-born Brit had faced a fierce attack – of the cycling kind – from Colombian rival contender Nairo Quintana on Alpe d’Huez during a thrilling stage 20 the previous day, but managed to limit his losses enough to stay in yellow and set up a simple finish.
Quintana had started Saturday’s stage two minutes, 38 seconds behind Froome, but while he launched early attacks on the mountain and put the leader under serious pressure, the one minute 20 seconds he was able to claw back weren’t enough to keep the title in contention on the final day.
Thibaut Pinot claimed the stage win in Alpe d’Huez, becoming the third Frenchman to win the stage in as many years.
As a result, Froome has now claimed two of the past three Tour de France titles, with three of the last four going to Team Sky, and the Briton also won the king of the mountains classification as well.
Peter Sagan meanwhile took the green points jersey for the fourth consecutive year.
