The Sri Lankan Commonwealth cycling team have been doing some extreme training lately – illegally riding one of the busiest motorways in Scotland in prep for their medal hunt later this month.
The four cyclists were spotted in full training kit by British triathletes Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee on the M74. Although they were riding at 40mph, it still wasn’t quite quick enough to escape notice, and the police soon clocked on and got to the scene.
In a statement that makes their chat with the riders sound a little surreal, police inspector Chris Burrows said: “I couldn’t quite believe my eyes. They were in full kit and didn’t seem to have a care in the world.
“They spoke good English and were very surprised they couldn’t cycle along the motorway.”
The Sri Lankans join a duo of Commonwealth Kenyans from 2002 in the club of confused pro cyclists keen enough to take on a bunch of cars driving at 70mph.
If you’re riding a motorway in Scotland soon, you should probably stay alert.
