Edelrid Huascaran Climbing Harness Review

German climbing gear specialists Edelrid (who also make the Parrot rope that we’ve included in the Outdoor 100), have placed sustainability at the heart of their manufacturing. So enter the world’s first BlueSign harness. To achieve this accolade, they have cut down water usage, energy and included fewer chemicals in the final product.

The brand has a very long history of producing alpine gear – it was founded back in 1863 by Julius Edelmann and Carl Ridder. The name is taken from the first letters of their surnames. In their more than 150 years in business they’ve been responsible for several key innovations in climbing equipment – notably producing the world’s first kernmantel rope in 1953.

“The brand has a very long history of producing alpine gear – it was founded back in 1863 by Julius EDELmann and Carl RIDder.”

The Huascaran harness is designed expressly for Alpine use where comfort is an important consideration, and at only 220g it is also very light. There are a few nifty touches that make this a go-to Alpine product. The leg loops have quick release buckle fastening, great for getting the harness on without having to remove crampons or ski boots.

The waist has a classic Mono buckle and the ends on the webbing have been ultrasonically welded for easy buckle threading when the wind is howling. It is also built to be breathable. Additionally there are two flexible gear loops and two attachment points for ice screw clips.

Overall this is a simple, but very well thought out multi-use harness that has the added bonus of being sustainably produced. Hats off Edelrid.
