“Which Was Your Best Mile And Which Was Your Worst?”

That's what we asked runners at the London Marathon finish line yesterday. And here's what they said

Derek, from London

Which was your best mile and which was your worst in London Marathon 2015?

“My best mile was mile 14, running down Narrow Street. I was still feeling great, the crowds were amazing and I saw my friends cheering, which really gave me a boost.

“Mile 24-25 was definitely the worst, the pain was at its greatest and I was struggling to hold on.”

Lucy and Adem, from London

Which was your best mile and which was your worst in London Marathon 2015?

Lucy: “Mile 23 was my best, I knew then that I’d get sub 3.30 (the time I was aiming for) and knock five minutes off my PB. And we got engaged at the finish line, that was pretty cool.

“The worst was mile 15, I had a blister on the bottom of my foot and at 15 miles it popped. That’s never happened before.”

Adem: “At mile two I met up with Lucy, so that was my best mile. We started in different pens so I didn’t expect to see her. It did mean that I had to go as fast as she did though.

“Mile 24 was the worst, it was the closest I came to a walk. My legs were saying they didn’t want to give me anything…”

Leah, from New Zealand

“My favourite miles were from 21 to the finish. I was sore, and badly wanted to finish – but I saw so many people along the way that I knew, so many were cheering my name, and I received lots of supercharged hugs, and that made me feel awesome.

I saw my husband at Big Ben and screamed ‘I’m smashing it!’

“I saw my husband at Big Ben and screamed ‘I’m smashing it!’ and practically flew to the finish line. My last few miles were my fastest!

“My worst miles were 14 to 18. I knew I didn’t have any supporters on the course, I slowed right down, and the smell of people having barbecues in their front yards made me want to be sick.”

Claire, from Manchester

Which was your best mile and which was your worst in London Marathon 2015?

“Mile 12 was the best. Running over Tower Bridge the roar of the crowd was amazing.

“Mile 25 was worst. My feet were cramping up and I was worrying I wouldn’t finish. I just concentrated on putting one foot in front of the other.”

Jason (Taffy), from South Wales

Which was your best mile and which was your worst in London Marathon 2015?

“My best mile was around the Cutty Sark, I couldn’t believe how many people were out on the course cheering on the runners. I just spent the whole mile going ‘Wow!’

“My worst was mile 19. I jumped on a curb to avoid a bottle and as I came down I felt my hip pop, which made the final seven miles a struggle.”

Tom, from Belfast

Which was your best mile and which was your worst in London Marathon 2015?

“Any mile where I saw my supporters and got to give them a hug was the best for me.

“Between mile 15 and 19 I found the going mentally tough. I felt lonely despite being surrounded by people, so that was the worst.”

Tom and Emma, from London

Which was your best mile and which was your worst in London Marathon 2015?

Tom: “My best was mile 23, as we were coming back into the centre of London. I knew the landmarks and I knew they meant I was nearly finished!

“Mile 13 was like torture. I could see the faster runners coming back already at 22 miles. Imagining the seven miles in-between was , fun.”

Getting to cross the finish line with two of my best mates made for a pretty epic final mile

Emma: “I ran with my friend Lenka and had been hoping to run with another friend V too. But a last-minute mix up meant we were in different starting pens. At mile 25 I spotted her and we ran together. Getting to cross the finish line with two of my best mates made for a pretty epic final mile.

“Mile 15 was probably the worst. I’d not clocked more than 15 miles in training and when I hit that point I realised another 11.2 miles was a bloody long way. But I survived it!”

Laura, from London (via Canada)

Which was your best mile and which was your worst in London Marathon 2015?

“Mile 12 to 13 was the best for sure. Going over Tower Bridge and seeing Paula Radcliffe flying past on the other side of the highway.

“There were no worst miles for me. I loved it!”

Zoë, from London

Which was your best mile and which was your worst in London Marathon 2015?

“Mile six was magical for me, as that’s where I’m from – Greenwich. I loved running round the Cutty Sark. It felt quite surreal after years of watching it from the sidelines or on TV.

“Mile 16 was the worst, my legs started to give up and I knew I wasn’t going to see any of my friends cheering until mile 21.”

Cara, from Gloucestershire

Which was your best mile and which was your worst in London Marathon 2015?

“I loved coming over Tower Bridge at mile 12. The crowds and atmosphere were electric, and I felt strong.

Even though my legs were crying out in pain, mile 24 was also awesome

“Even though my legs were crying out in pain, mile 24 was also awesome – the amount of supporters shouting my name and giving me words of encouragement was incredible. I’m so glad I decided to put my name on my top.

“I’m not sure what my worst mile was… There were a few where my legs just wanted to stop, but the sheer amount of people who came to watch was such a boost!”

Darren, from London

Which was your best mile and which was your worst in London Marathon 2015?

“Mile six was great as it’s my home turf. Running past my local shop, pub and bus stop felt comforting. Plus it meant that the first 10km were complete!

“Mile 24 was when it got really tough. I didn’t really notice the crowds from then on as found it easier to get my head down and block everything else out – including the pain!”
