You thought walking from the car to the lifts was uncomfortable in ski boots – this guy just ran the London Marathon last weekend in ski boots.

Dressed in a Spyder lycra ski racing suit and 15 year old vintage Salomon ski boots, Al Machell from Hertfordshire, UK ran 26.2 miles in an amazing 8 hours and 1 minute.

“I feel surprisingly fine today,” Al told PlanetSKI on Monday. “I’m looking forward to seeing my girlfriend later as she is a physio and will help me with some muscle aches… My blisters are not too pretty today!”

“My blisters are not pretty today!”

Al explained how he reached a serious low point at 18 miles but was inspired to carry on after a cheesy-but-true call from his mate Si, who said, “pain is temporary, glory is eternal!”

Skiing has been part of Al’s life since the age of six. However, he suffered a horrific crash aged 21 while ski racing in Verbier which left him with numerous injuries. The 36 year-old also battled a brain tumour and received a kidney transplant after years of chemotherapy.

He came up with the idea of running the London Marathon in ski boots after skiing in Italian ski resort Selva in the Dolomites.

“There is an awful lot of walking to get to the lifts. I didn’t really mind it and the idea of doing the marathon in ski boots just popped into my head,” he told PlanetSKI.

Al is now hoping his attempt will make it into the Guinness Book of Records. He is raising money and awareness for two charities that are close to his heart, The Brain Tumour Charity and The Royal Free Kidney Patient Association.
