“What’s Your Top Tip For Anyone Doing A Rough Runner Event?”

That’s what we asked people who’d just finished Rough Runner, The South last weekend. And this is what they said…

Polly, Jo and Jade, from Brighton

What’s your top tip for anyone else thinking about doing a Rough Runner event?

Jo: “Don’t wear shorts. My knees are raw from a slip on ‘The Travelator’.”

Jade: “Push yourself. I didn’t think I could do the hoops that were spaced further apart on ‘Hang Tough’, but I gave it a bash and I did it.”

Polly: “If you’re claustrophobic, don’t even bother with ‘Big Balls’ – it was weird emerging on all fours from a crammed cage of Swiss Balls; I felt like I was being given birth to.”

Jo and Emma, from Southampton

What’s your top tip for anyone else thinking about doing a Rough Runner event?

Jo: “Don’t wear your best clothes. They’ll get smelly, muddy and probably ripped.”

Emma: “Take your time. Don’t feel pressured to get through each obstacle first time. Getting up the ‘Ramp it Up’ wall was tough; a lot tougher than I thought it would be.”

Matt, from Winchester

What’s your top tip for anyone else thinking about doing a Rough Runner event?

“Don’t do it. Haha. No – just give it a go. Get a group of mates together, train a bit and then get out there and enjoy it. ‘Hang Tough’ was brilliant, but ‘Newton’s Cradle’ was definitely my least favourite obstacle; I don’t think I saw anyone do it.”

Shane, from Bournemouth

What’s your top tip for anyone else thinking about doing a Rough Runner event?

“The course is pretty hilly, so fit a lot of running into you’re training beforehand, it’ll make covering the distance between obstacles much easier and help with your stamina too.”

Danielle, Gary and Lauren, father and daughters team from Bognor Regis

What’s your top tip for anyone else thinking about doing a Rough Runner event?

Gary: “I think you do need to be a bit fit to get the most out of the event, so get yourself to a point where you can run 5 miles comfortably beforehand.”

Danielle and Lauren: “Definitely do it in a group. We had so much fun getting through each obstacle together and always felt as though we had support. ”

Dave and Charlie, from Southampton

What’s your top tip for anyone else thinking about doing a Rough Runner event?

Charlie: “Practice hills. Haha. The full course is 10 miles and the hill running was tough! And don’t drink a jug of Pimms the night before.

Dave: “Have breakfast for sure – a big breakfast. The course takes at least a couple of hours. And take some sweets round with you in case you need a sugar hit.”

Sam, Natalie and Steve, from Farnham

What’s your top tip for anyone else thinking about doing a Rough Runner event?

Natalie: “Don’t go out the night before. Haha. And don’t push yourself with training the week before, just go for a few light jogs.”

Steve: “Be prepared for the hills. It’s funny, there’s punishing hills all round the course, but my favourite obstacle was ‘The Travelator’, which is yet another hill and one that works against you, but I loved it.”

Becky, Olly, Kelly and Kiera, from Kent

What’s your top tip for anyone else thinking about doing a Rough Runner event?

Kelly: “We’ve all been doing obstacle course training in the run up to Rough Runner – fitting in more climbing, hill running, and upper body strength and endurance training, which definitely helped.”

Olly: “’Hang Tough’ was hard, so it’d be a good idea to get some practice in on some monkey bars beforehand.”

Kara and Joe, from Essex

What’s your top tip for anyone else thinking about doing a Rough Runner event?

Joe: “I don’t think there’s any way you can properly prepare for this sort of obstacle course, so just have fun.”

Kara: “In terms of preparation for this, all we did was sign up and show up. We’ve done the Spartan Race before, so we had a vague idea of what to expect – if you sign up for a couple of similar events beforehand, you’ll feel more confident.”

Toni and Craig, from Kent

What’s your top tip for anyone else thinking about doing a Rough Runner event?

Toni: “Sign up for a longer distance because there’s more breaks between obstacles. Also, I had a baby six months ago and knowing that I’m coming here has been a great motivator to get training again.”

Craig: “You don’t have to kill yourself training to get round the course. Go for a couple of runs and factor in a couple of Bodypump or Kettlebell classes in the run up to it, but really this is more of a fun run that you can just rock up to with your mates and have a laugh with.”
