OLYMPIC GAMES 2020

While no one really knows the exact origin of the Olympic Games, it’s generally agreed that they began back in 776BC in Olympia, Greece. Initially lasting just a single day and with just one event, the ‘Stadion’ race, a short sprint the length of the stadium, the Olympics soon grew to incorporate a second and third race. This third race became known as the dolichos and often took runners past important statues and shrines, such as the Nike statue, also known as the Winged Goddess of Victory.

Over the years, through war, revolution and unrest, the Olympic Games have endured, adapting to the times and introducing new sports to reflect the mood of the age, BMX Racing being perhaps the most radical of modern additions.

But times are changing more rapidly than ever and the next generation of athletes are just as likely to be riding street on a BMX than schooling a horse in a paddock.

Action sports have exploded in the age of the internet, with web clips of Shaun White, Danny MacAskill and Mark Webb going viral across the globe, inspiring a new wave of children and adults to pick up a BMX, search for their nearest snow field or ride a bike down a hill as fast as their will to live will let them.

We might be a little biased when we say this but the overly serious, sterile nature of recent Olympic Games could be reinvigorated to inspire the new generation of athletes out there, those so dedicated that they’ll spend every waking hour shaping jumps on a hillside mid-winter, braking bones and taking hard knocks to better themselves, and those that produce such amazing feats of daredevilry even your granny will be chomping at the bit to have a go.

So what would you like to see come the 2020 Olympics? Freestyle BMX, Skateparks, downhill mountain biking?

It’s time to make our voice heard people.
