You Make It, We Skate It: Here’s What Happens When You Try To Skate On A Glass Skateboard

Ever thought about swapping a standard skate deck for one made of glass? No, didn't think so.

Some things are perfect for skateboarding on. Your standard issue skateboard, for example. Yeah, your standard issue skateboard. You can’t beat it, can you? Wood, grip tape, wheels; it’s everything you could ever want from a skateboard. Or is it? What about glass? What if your skateboard was made of glass? It sounds like a terrible idea, doesn’t it? But maybe, just maybe, it isn’t? No. No. It’s a terrible idea, and this video proves it once and for all.

Now, you might have seen these ‘Skate Everything’ chaps doing their thing before. They once, for example, went skateboarding on an Apple Macbook Pro. Their video series, uploaded to the Braille Skateboarding channel on YouTube, goes by the philosophy “You make it, we skate it.” And boy, oh boy, do they practice what they preach. Glass skateboard? All in a day’s work for this total bunch of lads.

If you’re looking to watch this glass skateboard demonstration without spoilers, stop reading now. If you can’t be bothered to watch the video and just want to know what happens right away, stick with us and we’ll talk you through it.

In a nutshell, they take the glass skateboard for a solitary lap of the skatepark before attempting a drop in that totally fails. Put simply, the glass skateboard breaks apart like a window that’s just had a football kicked through it. Not only that, but the skater involved narrowly avoids getting stabbed in the neck by a six-inch shard of glass.

It turns out, and this probably won’t come as a shock to many of you, that glass is not a suitable material for skate decks. In fact, in a league table of suitable materials for skate decks we’d say glass is probably situated somewhere between brie and miscellaneous animal carcass. A rubbish idea on paper, and a rubbish idea in reality. Glass skateboards, not for us.
