Learning To Skateboard As An Adult? This Dude Nailed Kickflips In Just 5 Hours…

Zero to hero: Sit back and enjoy one man's pain...

How long does it take to learn how to kickflip a skateboard if you’ve never really stepped foot onto the griptape before? Well, if you’re anything like Mike Boyd, it takes five hours and 47 minutes.

The passing of time, and all of it’s hideous crimes are something that we’re all powerless to stop. And this is never more evident than when it comes to learning to skateboard.

If your skateboarding life began prior to being about 14, then you’re set for life. However, when you start getting longer in the tooth, things get tricker.

In fact, we’re surprised there aren’t Fight Club style skate lessons for adults, shrouded in secrecy and held at night, away from the shaming gaze of the greater public. Or maybe there are, but they’re too shrouded in secrecy for us to know about…

Our hero, Mike, admits that, aside from owning but never really using a skateboard when he was about 12, he’s never skated before, but wants to learn to kickflip. Handily for us, he not only documented his attempts, but also timed them, right from buying a board, to learning to ollie, and eventually his first kickflip.

It’s only nine minutes into his new life as a skater that Mike learns how to ollie, which we have to say, is pretty good going for a man old enough to grow a beard.

But, after landing a handfull of them in a row, he gets confident, and moves on to kickflips, and that’s where the pain begins.

Now, if you’ve ever attempted to learn any boardflip later in life, you will be all to aware that it’s a bit like smashing yourself in the shins with a big lump of wood every few minutes four hours on end.

And so it proved for Mike. So, ingeniously, he went and got himself a pair of football-style shinpads to keep his lower legs relatively bruise free. Will shinners become must-have, en vogue skate gear? Probably not. But they will stop you from crying in pain.

Another important lesson he learns is that the cheap supermarket skateboard he bought was a piece of shit, and quickly gets himself a proper deck.

What we really like about this video is, that after about four hours, Mike lands a sketchy kind of kickflip where the board slips from underneath him.

For a lot of people, they’d call it at that, but the spirit of skating has clearly got to our hero, and he’s having none of it. He wants to land one, if not bolts, then certainly a lot cleaner than he had.

He may not be troubling Nyjah Huston any time soon, but after five hours and 47 minutes, a bearded Scotsman, who likes a bit of golf, and has never really stood on a skateboard before, learnt how to kickflip. And for that, Mike Boyd, we salute you.
