When you think about skateboarding around the globe, you probably picture places like Barcelona, San Francisco, Berlin, New York, London, LA, Paris… However, you’d be listing places for a long time before you got down to Madagascar.
But that didn’t stop this bunch of skaters walking the road less traveled. No skate film has ever been made in the region, which would be enough to put some people off. However, it’s also enough to make those with adventure in their veins think it’s the prefect place to explore.
When UK skater Barney Page, along with Denny Pham, Nestor Judkins, Wilko Grüning, Brian Dolle, and Gosha Konyshev arrived, they were greeted with less than perfect conditions as many roads in the smaller towns aren’t paved – making it much like skating in Wolverhampton.
However, they did find friendly faces everywhere they went, including a local skate mob who were stoked just to have foreign skaters to roll with, and a rural town full of people who’d never seen a skateboard before, and enjoyed nothing more than having a go, and taking the piss when one other bailed.
Proof, it seems, that seeing your mate stack it is a universally funny thing.
Of course, you don’t have to go all the way to Madagascar to have a skate adventure of your own. They key is to go and do something new. Skate a spot you’ve never been to before. Go to a different town. Ride with a new group of people for a time. It’s not just your skating that will improve, we guarantee it.
