Atomic are arriving relatively late to the game with their take on modern, directional all-mountain skis – the Maverick and Mavens. The Austrian ski brand have made a name for themselves as maestros of race/piste machines and freeride quivers with their legendary Redster and Bent Chetler series, but up until now, have lacked a ski that blends the two.

“The Queen of the Maven range, the 93C is the widest and highest performing of the Maven trio”

Well, good things come to those who wait, because Atomic’s Maverick and Maven series unite the performance and playfulness of Atomic’s piste and freeride ranges. The Maven replaces Atomic’s previous Vantage piste/all-mountain range – a welcome change since the Maven looks to be far more versatile and, frankly, far more fun.

The Queen of the Maven range, the 93C is the widest and highest performing of the Maven trio and, as with the whole collection, is athlete-verified thanks to Atomic’s #sheskis team of women ambassadors.

Atomic Maven 93 C Build

The starting point for the Maven 93 C’s build is Atomic’s new OMatic core. Poplar wood, both stable and snappy, is matched with fibreglass and carbon layers to enhance the ski’s rebound. Whilst the men’s Maverick ski adds titanal reinforcement plates for extra dampness, the Maven relies on a carbon backbone running throughout the ski for lightweight responsiveness. As a result, the Maven 93 C weighs in it a nifty 1630g (172cm), compared to its 200g heavier male equivalent.

“The Maven relies on a carbon backbone running throughout the ski for lightweight responsiveness”

The Maven excels on piste (more on that later) this is thanks to its strong edge grip that derives from the full sidewall construction running throughout the ski. A ski designed to be used day-in-day-out across the whole spectrum of conditions requires a hearty resistance to wear and tear, which Atomic answers with their Dura Cap construction – rounded sidewall edges deflect debris coming your way as you tear down the mountain.

Atomic Maven 93 C Shaping

Flow Profile is the name Atomic given to the Maven 93 C’s Rocker/Camber/Rocker blend, which works out at around 20% nose rocker, 10% tail rocker, and 70% camber underfoot. In other words, this is a directional ski with shovels in the tip and tail for a measured dose of playfulness and flotation. The Maven 93 C borrows this blend directly from the Bent Chetler 100, as well as its bevelled tips – known as HRZN tech. This bowl-shaped tip design increases the tip/tail surface area for extra float, and hook-free turning, in the soft stuff.

The Maven 93 C’s flex pattern echoes this directional rocker and again takes inspiration from the Bent Chetler: stiff underfoot, pretty stiff in the tail, and far softer up front. This creates a hybrid of awesome float and manoeuvrability in the tip, precision and grip throughout the ski, and stability in the back.

Atomic modified the Maven 93’s sidecut to create a slightly shorter turn radius than the men’s Maverick to allow for slightly easier turn initiation. Whilst this modification feels slightly unnecessary, the Maven’s 16.5m radius does perfectly encapsulate this ski’s versatility; stable enough for slay lengthy carved turns, but nimble enough to bounce through bumps and mix up your turn shapes.

Who Is The Atomic Maven 93 C For?

If you’re an intermediate to advanced piste-lover who also wants a ski that rips on and off the groomers, the Maven 93 C looks to be an exciting option. This is a stiff, snappy, and solid ski, without the weight penalty and strong steering skills required from a piste-specific ski. There are better options out there if you’re looking for a powder ski – the Maven 93 C’s 93mm waist is enough to manage fresh snow, but this ski really thrives on firmer stuff. And when you’re on sturdier terrain, the Maven 93C’s rocker/camber blend, shovelled nose, and progressive flex make the Maven 93 C more intuitive, versatile, and playful than your average piste ski.
