More Info

Mons Royale is a New Zealand born brand that uses natural fibres to create sleek, functional, and incredibly warm base layers. Established in 2009 in the mountainous town of Wanaka, New Zealand, Mons was inspired by the local elements and rugged high country farms that the merino sheep (on which the base layers are made from) like to graze.

Hamish and Hannah Acland (the founders of Mons) have a background as both professional skiers and clothing designers; a great combination, we think you’ll agree, when it comes to creating a sustainable apparel brand. The base layers are impressively made out of 100% merino wool; a material that’s sourced from those handy Kiwi sheep near the Mons Royale HQ.

Fabrics and Features

The Mons Royale Yotei Tech base layers come in a variety of different colours. They all feature a cool split design of two blocks of colours that, in our minds at least, really gives us some strong ‘Star Trek outfit’ vibes. To save you from ever forgetting what brand you’re wearing, you’ve also got large Mons Royale branding down the left hand sleeve.

You’ve got the choice between standard long sleeves (which we’ve reviewed and shot in our studio) and then a high neck and powder hood option. The high neck, as the name suggests, features an extra bit of fabric, kind of like a buff, to provide improved warmth and draft exclusion around the neck. The hooded version features a warm hood that can easily fit under a helmet for maximum warmth.

In terms of the standard long sleeve that we reviewed, this comes in seven different colours for men and eight for women. We found them to not only be an ideal base layer for skiing and snowboarding but a wide range of other different activities as well. Think mountain biking, hiking and climbing (just be aware that you’re going to run pretty warm in these due to the thick merino warmth trapping in all that heat).

The powder hood option is like the standard long sleeve top with an additional balaclava hood built into the top. This layer is super handy for those cold days on the slopes when face coverings and hoods are necessary courses of action.
