Packed with all the essential features of advanced snowsport outerwear, Quiksilver does not disappoint with the Black Alder Jacket. What is it? Well, in short, it’s a shell that can keep you warm and dry anywhere on the mountain. By paying close attention to detail with its helmet-compatible hood, fixed-stretch powder skirt, lens cleaner and adjustable cuffs with internal thumb holes, Quiksilver have ensured you won’t be going without the essentials on a knee deep powder day in this ski jacket

The three-way compatible hood provided with the jacket ensures that it can fit over a helmet, if that’s a setup you prefer. Otherwise, it can be made tighter when it droops down behind you to stop it flapping around in the wind. This, of course, can be especially annoying and off-putting when you’re trying to ski in switch.

Quiksilver has provided with you more than enough storage options here. The four external pockets prevent the wearer from having to go through that horrible feeling of having all of your essentials crammed into one pocket. We all know, from experience, how restrictive and, in general, frustrating this can be. There is also an internal media pocket to keep electronics dry, and an inside mesh goggle pocket for added convenience.

All of the above is packed into a lightweight, Gore-Tex membrane; best in the business when it comes to keeping moisture out and breathability good. Nobody, of course, wants that horrible ‘sweaty back’ feeling. That’s never nice.

Not only does this jacket house the best performing membrane on the market, but it also requires less after-care than other waterproof membranes. Although that doesn’t mean you should completely disregard it from day one, it does mean you won’t have to walk out of the shop with six different bottles of Nikwax to keep the jacket clean and waterproof right from the off. You’ll haver to look after it, sure, but it won’t feel like a second job. That’s what we’re saying.

Although the Gore-Tex is designed to keep the breathability to a maximum, Quiksilver have also added underarm vents to reduce even further the chance of sweat building up inside the jacket.

Unlike some other brands in this price bracket, the Black Alder Jacket has a slightly more relaxed fit in order to stay true to the Quiksilver style. This, we find, is perfect for mobility on the mountain but also provides ample room for further layering underneath.

All in all, this jacket is packed with all the essentials, and nothing you don’t want, to attack off-piste missions, or lefts and rights just off the piste. Quiksilver want you to rock this jacket from opening day in the powder to the closing days in the spring slush. Given all the technology that is packed into it, we think it’s the perfect jacket for that job.
