Those crazy Bavarians the Freeski Crew certainly know where to find all the best spots, and they’ve picked a real gem for this video in the Saas-Fee resort.
Located in the Alps in the Swiss canton of Valais just north of the Italian border, Saas-Fee is renowned for it’s ultra reliable snowfall. This is because most of the slopes are at between 2500m and 3500m altitude. That’s seriously high, so remember to go easy on those après-ski beers if you don’t want to end up flaking out on the chairlift. It’s one of the highest resorts in the Alps, so you’d have to go a long way to beat it for sheer dependability.
The village of Saas-Fee itself is charmingly quaint, very much in the traditional Swiss style, and because it’s closed to cars the air is crisp and fresh and the streets are clean. Getting around isn’t a problem though, as plenty of the hotels provide transport, or you could take a taxi or try your luck with the local electric minibuses.
Saas-Fee doesn’t have quite the same prestige as, say, Verbier or Zermatt, which is actually a huge bonus as it means you don’t spend half your time avoiding bumping into the dawdling poseurs that can sometimes clog up the more popular resorts during peak season. In fact, probably the only drawback of this neat little resort is its size. You just won’t find the variety of runs you might be used to if you usually go for a one of these larger, more well-known destinations. Then again, as the Freeski Crew demonstrate so ably here, if what you’re really looking to do is perfect that radical, show-stopping trick, maybe a smaller resort is exactly what you need.
