Watch: Falling Drone Almost Hit Alpine Ski Racer Marcel Hirscher At Italian World Cup Slalom Event

If this shocking footage doesn't make you look up now and then, nothing will.

If social commentators and some futurologists are to be believed, drones and robots are basically 18 months away from taking control of the planet, decimating our food supplies, and forcing us to do menial chores around the house. That’s where we’re heading, folks. Sorry to tell you this so close to Christmas but it’s true.

Why are we feeling so bummed about drones? Because one of them has nearly wiped out Marcel Hirscher at a slalom skiing event in Italy (Madonna di Campiglio).

Hirscher was 10 seconds into his second run at the event when the drone suddenly fell from the sky and crashed spectacularly on the slope just behind him. Fortunately, the Austrian ski racer came away from the scary moment unscathed and he was able to cross the finishing line without further incident.

“This is horrible. This can never happen again. This can be a serious injury,” Hirscher said afterwards.

Despite the drone-crash being a bit of a freak accident, the fact that it happened at all will inevitably raise questions about the use of technology and how it impacts on the safety of competitors.

As his post-race Instagram shows (see below), Hirscher was also able to see the funny side in all this. Fairly remarkable, when you consider he almost had his head taken off by a malfunctioning drone.
