Michael Edwards, better known as Eddie “The Eagle”, is a British ski jumper who has gone down in Winter Olympic folklore for being absolutely terrible at ski jumping.
Edwards represented Great Britain at Calgary 1988, and finished dead last in both the 70 metre and 90 metre events. His efforts, however, became an iconic symbol of “heroic failure”, with the viewing world taking him into their hearts as the loveable underdog.
The story of “The Eagle” is a story of perseverance in the face of adversity, and of a man who refused to let anything stop him from achieving his lifelong dream of being an Olympian.
The film starring Hugh Jackman and Taron Egerton is out next year and, if this official trailer is anything to go by, it looks like it’s going to be an emotional comedy rollercoaster very much in the style of Cool Runnings. This is definitely going on our one-to-watch list in 2016.
