Indoor Wingsuit Flying: You Can Soon Try The Craze in This Awesome Spot in Stockholm
No previous experience needed...
Indoor Wingsuit Flying is a new project opening in Stockholm, Sweden in September 2017, offering exactly what the name suggests – the opportunity to learn how to fly, without the risk.
At the moment, the fatality rate for skydiving is around one death per 100,000 jumps, which makes performing 17 jumps in a year roughly as dangerous as driving a car 10,000 miles in one year.
While of course all jumps and dives will differ in terms of challenge, the risks involved increase dramatically for BASE jumpers.
The fatality rate for BASE jumping, which includes wingsuiting, is closer to one death per 500-1000 jumps, making it more than a hundred times more risky than skydiving.
Wingsuiters are usually experienced skydivers with hundreds of jumps under their belt, but even so, piloting a wingsuit if an entirely different experience to jumping out a plane with just a parachute.
This means that it can be unpredictable, and also means that anyone not heavily involved in jumping is unlikely to ever fly one of the suits. Indoor Wingsuit Flying fixes both of these problems, providing a classroom where both experienced flyers can practise their moves and where beginners can learn from scratch.
Of course wingsuiting is always going to be a dangerous and at times unpredictable, but being able to practise indoors is a hell of a lot safer than trying it out for the first time off the edge of a cliff!
A post on the Indoor Wingsuiting Facebook page reads: “We can fly. You can fly, too. Anyone can – young or old. Freely and safely. In September 2017, Indoor Wingsuit Flying Stockholm opens – thereby changing the future for aeronautic sports. The borders for what we thought was possible have been moved. Past conceptions are revised. Most of all: YOU can fly. For real.”
