Patagonia SnowDrifter Backpack 30L Review

When you’re heading into the backcountry – whether you are ski touring, splitboarding or snowshoeing – your backpack plays a huge part in your day. It holds your food and water. It’s home to your avalanche equipment, extra layers, maybe even a tent and sleeping bag. A good backpack can make your whole experience a lot easier.

Patagonia was founded by climber and mountaineer Yvon Chouinard back in 1965 when he was still a roaming climber, selling pitons from the back of his car.

“Patagonia is one of those brands which inspires dedication.”

Today Patagonia is a multi-million pound business and one of the biggest innovators of outdoor gear on the planet. Environmentalists love Patagonia for their ethical, eco-friendly values – from campaigning to save surf spots and rivers to using environmentally-friendly fabrics.

The SnowDrifter Backpack is a great backpack for anyone heading into the backcountry during the winter. At 30 litres, it’s large enough to hold everything you need for a day (and a night) in the mountains.

It has two easily accessible openings – a big U-shaped zipper on top, plus a back panel allowing access to your gear while the pack is still fully loaded. It has a compartment especially made for avalanche equipment, including slots for your shovel, probe, snow saw, plus an hydration sleeve.

On the outside, you will find a number of options for carrying your skis or snowboard – whether you choose vertical, A-frame or diagonal – including buckles to keep your gear secure as you hike or climb.

You won’t have to worry about the SnowDrifter wearing out too quickly. It’s made from durable 100 per cent plain woven nylon, which is designed to withstand punctures and abrasion in the mountains. This backpack is also covered with a durable water-repellent finish to protect it from the odd snow shower.

Comfort is key when it comes to backpacks. This has heat-venting, snow-sloughing mesh on the shoulder straps plus a padded waistbelt and a chest strap that you can adjust to fit your body. You’ll be able to do long ski touring or splitboarding missions without even thinking about the pack when it’s on your back – which is exactly what you want.

Because all Patagonia’s products are made to the highest standards of both quality and environmental friendliness, it’s one of those brands which inspires dedication. Whether you are already a fan or it’s a new discovery, be warned – buying this backpack may well spark a lifelong relationship with this most interesting of companies.
