Found off the Southern tip of Tasmania, the island off the South coast of Australia, Shipstern Bluff – or ‘Shippies’ to locals – manages to look almost as terrifying as it actually is.
It’s not uncommon for a wave to break within a larger wave at Shipstern. The effect, that suffers call steps, is not dissimilar to the small alien coming out of the large aliens mouth in the famous Ridley Scot film about aliens, the title of which we can never remember.
The colossal waves at Shipstern break directly onto a massive granite slab just beneath the water, ready to crush anybody unfortunate enough to fall while trying to tame it. Throw into this the fact it’s a favourite spot for Great White sharks to hang out, this is one of the gnarliest surfable spots on the planet.
Shipstern is rarely small, but it’s in the winter months that it grows to its largest, and late December and early January being particularly gargantuan, if you’ve got the guts.
