Al Mennie in ‘First Up, First Down’

Irish legend on why his home country is the best for surfing.

Irish surfer Al Mennie stars in the latest episode of the Volvo-sponsored series First Up, First Down.

The series follows a series of talented riders and surfers as they go about their sports at their favourite spots, focussing on what it means to them.

There’s some good chat about how surfing feels, and why it’s worth all that effort for a wave that’s only “10 seconds long”. But it’s not just the feeling, it’s where you ride waves as well.

“It’s big, it’s cold and it’s windy, but there’s no-one here!”

Steve Peat, the mountain biker, spent an episode singing the praises of Scotland, but for Al here it’s all about Ireland.

Judging by the quality of those waves and the beauty of the landscape, which is stunning even on a bleak wintery day, we’d have to agree that it looks pretty special.

But the best thing of all? It’s completely empty! As Al puts it: “It’s big, it’s cold and it’s windy, but there’s no-one here!” How awesome is that?
