Southern California is a pretty mellow place to be a surfer if you are able to give some respect in the water and keep yourself to yourself and just surf. However the crowds do mean tempers can boil over, and probably one of the biggest dangers is getting into a scrap in the surf, but it’s easily avoided. Other than that there is the men in the grey suits,

California has a lot of Great White sharks, and whilst the so called Red Triangle is further north, they do come south. How dangerous are they? Well attacks do happen, they are rare but it’s worth keeping it in mind, but not so much that you should have the Jaws theme tune in your head all the time.
