GoPro Karma Drone Review & Hero5 Review. A First Look at GoPros 2016 Cameras

What's new with the latest GoPro, and how much will they cost?

Action camera giants GoPro have just unveiled their latest products; The GoPro Hero5 Black, The GoPro Hero5 Session, and most excitingly the GoPro Karma drone. It’s the latest release by the company, following the unveiling of the Session in July 2015, and the Hero5 Black in 2014. We were lucky enough to get a sneak peak at the gear – here’s our first look review.

As you probably already know, existing GoPro’s are pretty much indestructible in the case, and can shoot cinema quality footage, so what can be done to make these tiny cameras even better? Let’s have a look at what’s new.

GoPro Hero5 Black – £350

The new top-of-the-range action camera – already been dubbed “the best GoPro yet” – features a two-inch touch display with what are promised to be simplified controls (although, let’s be honest, they were never too complicated in the first place).

The super hi-res 4k, 30frames per second (fps) option remains, but now you can operate the action cam using just your voice. Presumably, this will stop people from having to faff at the top of the ski lift trying to turn their GoPro on when mounted on their head (what we like to call the Radical Unicorn). The voice command recognises seven different languages, even coping remarkably well with a Birmingham accent.

The Hero5 Black will also work with the new GoPro Cloud which has also been added to the growing arsenal. When you charge your HERO5 Black, it will automatically download your footage to the cloud wirelessly, meaning you never lose that shot of your buddy zeeching the rail in the park.

Of course, the Hero5 also packs in all of those features you’d expect from such a high-end action cam, including being waterproof up to ten metres  – this time without the housing which cinreaded the quality of the audio it can produce, stereo audio recording with advanced wind cancelling, pro-level image stabilisation, GPS, RAW and WDR (a bit like HRD, but designed to be used on the move) photograph options and more.

GoPro Hero5 Session – £250

The more compact brother of the HERO5 Black, this new camera shares the same small design as the Hero4 Session, but with some serious upgrades under the hood.

It can take full 4k footage at 30fps, and incredible 10mega pixel photos. Just like the Hero5 Black, it also supports voice control, and enjoys the same level of waterproofing, and an easy one-button control.

GoPro Karma – £720 (£1,000 when packaged with a Hero5 Black)

It feels like the most anticipated move since the first commercial camera drone was launched, but GoPro have finally released their own drone, and they’ve called it Karma.

Capable of fitting into a small backpack (although, at a guess, not one of those tiny ones commuters have that look large enough to hold little more than a tangerine), Karma is your way of getting the kind of GoPro footage that’s usually the preserve of film crews with the budget for a helicopter.

Karma is not only good to fly straight out of the box, but also that its user-friendly interface (a game-style controller with touch-screen display) mean that virtually anybody can use it, irrespective of training or experience. It’s literally child’s play.

One of the most promising things about the Karma is the Image Stabilising mechanics that are built-in to the drone. Not only do they keep your shots silky smooth while in the air, but you can take the gimble out of Karma, mount it on the GoPro Grip, and get those same buttery visuals whether you’re mountain biking, snowboarding, surfing … whatever.

Happily, Karma is compatible with both the HERO5 Session, and the previous HERO4 Black and Silver models, as well as the HERO5 Black. So, should you have already bagged a GoPro you shouldn’t need any extra adapters to get your flying footage.

The GoPro Hero5 Black and the 5 Session are released in early October, with Karma hitting the shelves later that month. No doubt all three will be very high on a lot of Christmas lists.
