This Couple Created A 3km Floating Pier Between Two Islands, So Everyone Can Walk On Water

Two islands, connected with 100,000 square meters of shimmering yellow fabric....

If you fancy travelling from Monte Isola to the island of San Paolo, it usually costs you a bit of time and money. Your best bet would be to book a place on a boat trip, or rent out your own boat and sail across alone.

Thanks to the married couple and artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude however, for the next three weeks everyone can simply walk over the water and between the two islands for free!

The two artists have created a three kilometre floating pier, made of 100,000 square meters of shimmering yellow fabric, draped over a modular floating dock system of 220,000 high-density polyethylene cubes which connect  Sulzano to Monte Isola and to the island of San Paolo.

This is much more than just a bridge however, walkers will be able to feel the movement of the ocean beneath their feet, along with the waves and tides.

While the walkway’s bright yellow colour has been designed to clash with its surrounding environment, the artists have put the up most thought into how its works with the natural landscape.

“The Floating Piers are an extension of the street and belong to everyone”

The mountains surrounding the lake offer a bird’s-eye view of The Floating Piers, allowing you to view the whole installation from above. According to the creators, the idea behind this placement “unnoticed angles and altering perspectives.”

“They will feel the movement of the water under foot,” says Christo. “It will be very sexy, a bit like walking on a water bed.”

The best thing about the walkway however, is that it’s totally available to everyone who visits the area.

“There are no tickets, no openings, no reservations and no owners” says Christo. “The Floating Piers are an extension of the street and belong to everyone.”

This is such a rad idea, we’d love the chance to walk the whole thing ourselves! If you feel the same, you’d better hurry, the walkway will disappear on the third of July!
