Think You Were Born To Have Adventures? Only 20 Per Cent Of Us Actually Have The ‘Wanderlust Gene’

It's all about restless genes....

Some people always seem to be on the move.

Whether it be travelling between different continents or countries, changing jobs, moving cities or even going between partners- their need for change and excitement is visible to all.

They’re thrill seekers and tend to be daring, impulsive and not always appreciative of consequence. Their personality is based around an itch to create as many new experiences as possible.

Sound like anyone you know?

A study into genetics has discovered that people with these attributes may have no choice over them, they’re genetically designed to be that way.

The basis for the findings is around the gene DRD4, which helps control dopamine in the brain and is present in everyone, controlling enjoyment and reward.

It’s the variant named DRD4-7R however, that has been found by scientists to be carried by roughly 20 per cent of the population, that holds the secret to life’s explorers.

Individuals with the 7R strain are not only curious about all new experiences in life, but specifically more likely to jump on a plane

The 7R variation makes people more likely to take risks; explore new places, ideas, foods, relationships, drugs, or sexual opportunities; and generally embrace movement, change, and adventure.

A study, originally aiming to find information on Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, looked into the presence of the gene in humans from migrating cultures in connection to their migration patterns.

What they found was that almost all study participants with this gene had a long history of traveling, with their ancestors travelling long distances.

The link between these migrating cultures and the gene, may point to why individuals with the 7R strain are not only curious about all new experiences in life, but specifically more likely to jump on a plane and explore new parts of the planet than most people.

So what do you think about this? Is a sense of exploration and adventure just something your born with?

Are some people made to settle and build communities while others, while others place change and new places as their top priority?

Or is a sense of adventure something that you can learn from taking risks and having an open mind?

Whether you have the 7R strain and agree with the findings, or you’re a home body who discovered their curious side, let us know what you think of the so-called ‘adventure gene’…
