When you say yoga, most people think about flexibility.  More than anything else, yoga is known most widely known for making people bendy, supple and flexible.

What people don’t realise however, is that flexibility is just one small part of what yoga can give, alongside the bigger benefits of muscle strength and recovery. This is especially true for the weekend warriors among us, who live and eat healthily, but spend some of their week tied to a desk and the rest of it charging mountains.

We all have those days when we don’t move as much as we should. Through increasing your range of motion and building deep muscle strength, frequent yoga helps to build real strength that makes suer that our bodies are ready to face any adventure, even if we haven’t been training for the last few days.

There are many ways to help recovery after a day of impactful exercise, to prevent pain and stiffness on the following day. As well as trying this  yoga routine, all athletes will tell you that athletic durability comes as much from the inside as it does the outside. People who drink cherry juice after endurance training, experience less inflammation than those who don’t, adding to their physical resilience against extreme activity.

“The aim is to be strong at your end range of motion” says Carver on her site Yoga15. “To run, jump, climb, lift, push, pull, crawl, squat and throw effectively. Not to be spectacularly bendy but too weak to take full advantage of your flexibility.”

Check out Abi’s yoga routine below to start increasing your flexibility.

“Unlike our hunter-gatherer ancestors, we no longer bend, stretch and reach sufficiently throughout the day to keep our bodies supple and healthy” says Abi. “To stay agile and pain-free, we need to incorporate consistent flexibility training into our exercise programs.”
