John John Florence first become well known to the wider surfing community in 2005 when he became the youngest ever surfer to compete in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, held in his own backyard on the North Shore of Hawaii. Often touted as a surf prodigy, his exploits at such a young age led him to appear on covers of magazines including Surfer, TransWorld SURF and Surfing. His star rose even further in 2012, when he experienced a meteoric rise in fortunes on the world tour. After finishing 34th overall the previous year, his rookie season with the elite of the sport, he shot up the leaderboard to finish fourth. During the year, he secured his first world title event victory, the Billabong Rio Pro, and also won the ASP Prime Telstra Drug Aware Pro and the 5-star Volcom Pipe Pro. Born on 18th October 1992, JJ grew up in Hale'iwa near the Banzai Pipeline. He claims he was introduced to surfing by his mother Alexandra at just six months, using a life-jacket on his father’s board, and he was riding on his own by the age of five. He went on to earn three NSSA Open titles before emerging onto the world stage. John John’s smooth and effortless style blurs the line between contest surfing and freesurfing and normally finds a perfect balance between the two. He can bust jaw-dropping moves, including his signature air reverse, in all conditions around the world, and his consistency means he should be a world championship contender for years to come.
