Kayaking, Canoeing & Rafting

Introducing Onak | The Origami Inspired Folding Canoe

This canoe is water resistant, ‘unsinkable’ and fits in the trunk of your car. What more do you need for an adventure?

Have you ever yearned for something more exciting than the inflatable rubber dingy to chuck into the boot for that camping holiday? Onak have created the perfect new gadget for you…

Kayaking vs. Canoeing: What’s the Difference?

Folding up into the size of a suitcase on wheels, their new canoe can be wheeled anywhere from a boating lake to the Thames to the Peak District.

Small and light enough to carry under your arm, when you unpack it and fold it down and you have a strong, fast canoe, there, ready to paddle away.

The idea is to offer the non-canoeing public a canoe that is totally convenient and has already proved itself to be extremely popular.

Winning this year’s Outdoor Industry Award, the canoe has also managed to gain €100,000 of its €150,000 pledge on their Kickstarter within just three days.

“It can sail through one centimetre of ice no problem”

If it’s possible to take a canoe into more urban spaces easily and comfortably with minimal hassle, more people will canoe and the world will inevitably be a better place.

The canoe is the brainchild of co-founder Otto Van de Steene, who quit his job after coming up with the idea from creating tiny origami canoes out of paper.

“When I quit my day job almost 3 years ago because I merely folded some paper canoes, everybody called me crazy.” he says.

“Now it seems I was not the only one with a faraway dream of paddling in a canoe that folds into a suitcase.”

Made of a tough plastic derivative called polypropalene, the canoe seems to be pretty much indestructible. The layers of plastic have a ‘honeycomb structure’ which massively increases boignancy, technically making the canoe unsinkable, even when full of water.

if you manage to get a hole in your canoe ‘You must have been doing something badass!’ says the team at Onak. ‘It can sail through one centimetre of ice no problem.’

After two years worth of design plan deliberation and innovation they are finally ready to start rolling it across urban areas everywhere.

A canoe you can ride down the river, then fold away and carry to work? We’re gonna be first in line…
