Paid To Visit Japan | Japanese Government Planning $12.5 Billion Tourism Stimulus

The Japanese government are planning a huge cash injection in a bid to kickstart tourism industry again

There are countless reasons to visit Japan – from eating the best sushi in the world, to 17 metre powder skiing days we feel like we don’t really have to give you too many reasons to pay the welcoming folk of ‘Nippon’ a visit. But the Japanese government have gone and given you another, with plans to subsidise tourist’s holidays.

“It might be time to start planning your next visit to The Land of the Rising Sun”

In an effort to boost tourism in the country, the head of the Japanese Tourism board Hiroshi Tabata, announced the the initiative will provide subsidies of up to £150/day to visitors in vouchers and discounts that will be able to be spent in local shops and restaurants. This amounts to a $12.5 billion (£10.2 billion) cash injection into the Japanese tourism industry.

An expected boom in tourism spending has been dashed, following the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics – that was set to feature climbing, surfing and skateboarding as permanent events for the first time. This scheme looks to breathe life into a much-needed part of the Japanese economy.

Said to be coming into effect by the end of July, the scheme is currently aimed towards domestic tourism within Japan, but the Japanese Tourism Board haven’t ruled out help for foreign visitors as and when travel restrictions do begin to lift. Whether you’re after neck-deep powder in Hokkaido or want to chase the Ichinomiya surf, it might be time to start planning your next visit to ‘The Land of the Rising Sun’.
