A volcano in Southern Chile that’s been dormant for 42 years has erupted twice in the space of just a few hours, firing a column of hot ash and lava kilometres into the air.

Time-lapse footage of the eruption has emerged, and it’s a stark reminder of both the beauty, but also brute force of nature. We like to think it’s the planets disgusted reaction to the Kylie Jenna Lip Challenge that’s ruining the lips of idiots the world over (however, we accept it’s probably just some of that regular volcanic eruption stuff).

Authorities have issued a Red Alert warning, and have had to immediately evacuate around 4000 people that live within a 12 mile radius of the Calbuco volcano. Happily, thus far there have ben no reports of deaths, missing persons, or even injuries as a direct result of the double eruption that happened.

However, the situation remains very serious. “With the eruption column so high, the main risk is that it collapses, falls due to gravity because of its own weight and causes a pyroclastic flow,” Gabriel Orozco – a Chilean vulcanologist told local media.

On the off chance that you’re not familiar with what a pyroclastic flow is, it’a s stream of super heated gas and rocks that can travel at over 180mph, destroying anything in its path.

Large quantities of ash have already fallen, and encased the local town of Puerto Montt in a noxious grey blanket. There are also fears in neighbouring Argentina that the fall out from the eruption could float over and affect boarding towns and villages.

Many flights in the area have already been canceled, in scenes reminiscent of the 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland, that resulted in many holiday makers across Europe stranded abroad, with no way of getting home.
