Action-camera giants GoPro have just dropped the HERO 4 Session – an ultra-light, ultra-small camera which is water resistant even without the case.

Now, we’ve never had a problem with the size of GoPros, even when they’re in the case, but we guess the less an action camera makes you look like a unicorn the better, so it’s cool to see the company make a smaller design, and it’s only a natural step.

The Session is a one-and-a-half inch cube, making it half the size of the standard GoPro and at only 2.6 ounces, 40 percent lighter as well. That’s sure to be big news for any cyclists out there counting every gram on their bike.

What’s likely to get a lot of people stoked about the Session though is the waterproofing and battery levels. The new cam can withstand submersion up to 10 metres without a case – which is no 40 metres with a case, but still mightily impressive for its size – and it can shoot in full-HD for up to two hours, which outshines the battery life of the rest of the GoPro range currently on the market.

The camera doesn’t shoot in 4K, but then again, whatever you’re reading this on more than likely isn’t able to screen 4K either, so that shouldn’t be too much of an issue. Rather, the 8–megapixel camera comes with a 1440p resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio, which will still provide some top quality filming.

User-wise, as you can imagine there aren’t so many buttons on the Session. There’s a main shoot button which when held down for three seconds can also be used for time-lapses, and a second button on the back which lets you pair the GoPro with your phone or tag highlight moments. The SD card and charging port is then housed on another side of the cube.

That all seems simple enough, but it is worth noting that you do have to use the app or a remote control to take regular photos and to set all your resolutions, frame rates and other mode specifics, which does sound like more hassle than the rest of the HERO range.

The camera is going to be on the market for £329.99, which is interesting given that the much-hyped GoPro HERO 4 Silver, which comes with a screen on the back for viewing, can now be bought for less.

Still, it’s an impressive innovation and one that more likely than not points towards the future of the action cam. We’re looking forward to getting the chance to try one out.
