Iouri Podladchikov, nailed an incredible run to take gold at the 2014 Winter Olympics. He dethroned the American favourite and defending champion, Shaun White in a sensational, nail biting final that pushed halfpipe riding to new heights.
He pulled off his trademark YOLO flip in immaculate fashion to record an awesome 94.75 in his second run was enough to see out the assault of Ayumu Hirano and Shaun White. White, the overwhelming favourite for gold failed to end up on the podium having taken two huge slams on his first run and making several big mistakes in his second run and the final run of the competition.
In contrast Podladchikov, who was born in Russia but represents Switzerland, was immaculate getting huge amplitude and landing his trademark trick perfectly. Ayumu Hirano, the 15 year old sensation from Japan, came second with a having scored of 93.50 and his countryman Tako Hiraoka picked up bronze with a score of 92.25.
The Americans were much fancied to pick up a medal in the event having picked up at least two in the men’s Halfpipe in each Olympics since 2002.
