Two new spider species have been discovered in Queensland, Australia, and don’t they look fabulous. Nicknamed ‘Sparklemuffin’ and ‘Skeletorus’ (yes, really), this flamboyant new double act could give Dolce and Gabanna a run for their money in the high fashion stakes (although not, necessarily, in the controversial-remarks-relating-to-Elton-John’s-children…stakes).

Discovered by University of Berkley student Madelin Girad, and an unnamed friend, these eight-legged trendsetters are named after their elaborate markings. Not only do these two look as sharp as a carving knife, they’re also from a family of spiders renowned for their dance-like courtship rituals (The Peacock Family).

They look good! They can dance! Is there anything these spiders can’t do?

Well, actually, yes.

Unlike the Brazilian Wanderer, and the Black Widow, it turns out these spiders are not that good in a barroom brawl. In terms of them being a threat to humans, they’re about as dangerous as cream cheese or your Nan’s ornamental cushion collection.

Jurgen Otto, whose surname immediately brings to mind the bus driver in The Simpsons, is an entomologist. Entomology, in case you didn’t know already, refers to the scientific study of insects. It is Otto’s hope that these wannabe hipsters will help to dispel some of the world’s negative feelings towards spiders.

Whether these cat walk stars can really change the way we think about arachnids is up for debate. One thing, however, is absolutely certain. You can expect to see the Sparklemuffin and Skeletorus range in your local Topman, any day now.
