Coco Ho has been surfing since she was seven. The Hawaiian comes from a family of surfers; her father, uncle and brother have all surfed in the professional ranks, and by the time she was eight years old, she was already sponsored.
For most though, Coco will need no introduction. The progressive 21-year-old has been on the pro tour for years now, picked up countless wins, awards and titles in that time and has always been one of the fan’s favourite when she takes to the waves.
We caught up with the rider at the Swatch Women’s Pro Trestles in California earlier this month and asked her to run us through some surfing basics. Looking to get involved in the sport or need some tips to hone your technique? Look no further.
Leash
“The leash is attached to your back foot on the lower ankle. Remember to keep the cord to the back of your foot so it doesn’t tangle in your legs when you stand up.”
Paddle
“To keep your balance and constant movement, you should always paddle with alternate arms. Put your hand as far forward as possible to get as much stroke and power.
“You need to lay on the board so it is almost flat in the water as well. Keep the nose slightly up.”
Stand Up
“Before you stand up, place your hands evenly on each side of the board at your shoulder level. Some people grab their rails and some keep them flat. I keep them flat.”
“Push up from your shoulders like if you were doing a push up.”
“Swing your front foot under you shoulders and evenly between your hands. I am a regular footer so my left foot goes first. Make sure your feet stay in the centre of the board so it stays balanced in the water.”
“Finally, stand up and remember to keep your centre of gravity low and evenly balanced across both feet.”
Foot Position
“Last but not least, I always try to have my back foot placed over my fins and my front foot centre on the board. Keep them centred on the board across the stringer so the board is balanced in the water.”
