Scientists Warn That Human-Made Climate Change Is Killing The Earth

World Meteorological Organisation report is a damning indictment on what humans are doing to the planet

The World Meteorological Organisation – the boffins that monitor and study all things weather related around the globe, and basically the Weather Wing of the United Nations – have warned that climate change created by humans has pushed our planet into “truly uncharted territory”.

This comes after news that 2016 was the hottest year the planet has faced since records began, and that trend has continued in 2017.

“Earth is a planet in upheaval due to human-caused changes in the atmosphere”

In a report released today, the WMO have said that, following their studies on the climate in 2016, there were unprecedented levels of heat across the planet last year, exceptionally low ice levels at both the North and South Poles, and rising sea levels.

Some of this phenomenal change in climate can be attributed to El Niño – the naturally occurring climate cycle that few really understand fully, but apparently affects everything from snowfall to how high waves can break – but global warming is still being driven by human activities.

Speaking to The Guardian, The WMO’s Director of the World Climate Research Programme, David Carlson said “Even without a strong El Niño in 2017, we are seeing other remarkable changes across the planet that are challenging the limits of our understanding of the climate system. We are now in truly uncharted territory,”.

Jeffrey Kargel, a Glaciologist from the University of Arizona went further, adding “Earth is a planet in upheaval due to human-caused changes in the atmosphere. In general, drastically changing conditions do not help civilisation, which thrives on stability”. Terrifying.
