Ever wanted to spend your summer saving the world by drinking cocktails and sunbathing on Leonardo DiCaprio’s private island? We reckon we can guess your answer.

It won’t all be cocaine and quaaludes though. In fact, when Leonardo DiCaprio took all of those substances and threw those wild parties in The Wolf of Wall Street and The Great Gatsby, he was actually playing a character – it will amaze some to learn that his life is not really like that all the time.

In real life, Leo is actually a bit of an eco-activist. 10 years ago, the Hollywood star bought the 104-acre Blackadore Caye island near Belize for just under two million dollars, and now he has plans to turn the strip into a world-class conservation and luxury holiday resort.

DiCaprio has teamed up with Paul D. Scialla of design and construction firm Delos, and will be looking to transform his island into a haven for holiday-makers and a base for scientists, with 45 percent of the island designated to growing indigenous marine grass to support a manatee conservation site.

That’s not exactly what you’d picture Jordan Belfort doing with his fortune, is it?

Indeed, Leo’s titanic project (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) includes plans to replant native trees and mangroves to solve the coastline erosion and deforestation caused by fisherman who previously used the land before DiCaprio’s reign.

The 68 guest villas set to be built on the water will also stand on a unique arc-shaped base, which will protect the several species of fish that swim below and make heavy use of solar power and natural cooling as well.

Of course, we imagine there will still be a fair few bottles of champagne popped on the island. In addition to the scenic villas being built on the water, there will be 48 luxury homes on the main body, costing from $5million to $15 million to build.

Speaking to the New York Times, DiCaprio said: “The main focus is to do something that will change the world.

“I couldn’t have gone to Belize and built on an island and done something like this if it weren’t for the idea that it could be groundbreaking in the environmental movement.

“With the onset of climate change, there are huge challenges, so we want the structure to not only enhance and improve the environment, but to be a model for the future. That includes restoring the island, creating conservation areas where we can hold research conferences, and regenerating the entire ecosystem to bring it back to its original form and beyond.”

Our opinion? Leonardo DiCaprio is a wonderful man and a wonderful actor. Give the guy a medal at the next possible chance. Either that or, y’know, an oscar. He’s surely due one eventually.
