Chris Froome has won the bronze medal in time trial road cycling, with Dutch rider Tom Dumoulin taking silver and Swiss cyclist Fabian Cancellara beating the rest of the field to the gold in the second Olympic road cycling event.
Though few people would have ruled out Cancellara before the race, it’s safe to say that the result is somewhat of a surprise, with the 2008 time trial gold medallist struggling in the Tour de France this year and indeed throughout the season.
Fabian rode strongly from the start though, pacing himself to perfection and finding himself clear in the lead at every checkpoint other than the first.
Dumoulin will have been slightly gutted with his silver, especially considering he’s still recovering from a broken wrist suffered in the Tour de France, but it was utter heartbreak for Rohan Dennis of Australia, the 2014 Commonwealth Games silver medallist losing out on a medal due to a mechanical fault with his handlebars.
